Steven Spence

Steven Spence hails from the Island of Unst, the most northerly isle in the UK. Unst has always had a great musical tradition with fiddlers like Frediman Stickle and Gibby Gray. Steven is a direct descendant of Frediman Stickle through his mother which shows in his distinguished ability as a composer as well as a first rate fiddle player.

Steven was inspired to play the fiddle whilst attending a concert of the great Shetland fiddler Aly Bain. Steven then began lessons with Dr Tom Anderson and later with Trevor Hunter and soon progressed to performing in concerts and taking part in and winning competitions. At the age of thirteen he was the junior winner of the talent contest at the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick. At fourteen he went to the summer school of music at the Stirling University to progress further with his playing where he made friends with other young musicians including Kathryn Tickell and Gordon Gunn.

Steven played in and formed a number of bands before joining Shetland"s first and foremost folk band Hom Bru which he played with for ten years before leaving in 1993.

In 2004 Steven launched his first CD and book 'Spencie's Tunes'. Over the years Steven has been writing tunes for family and friends as well as for all sorts of occasions and has since followed with another two volumes of tunes.
