George Clavey was born in Edinburgh. A non-Gaelic speaker he began learning the language whilst working in Skye, eventually combining his excellent singing voice with his mastery of Gaelic to win the National Mod Gold Medal in 1960. He was the first non-native speaker to do so. George became a favourite Gaelic singer sought after to perform at ceilidhs and on radio and television.
