Sydney MacEwan was born in Glasgow in 1908 to a Scots-Irish Catholic family.. On leaving school, he had a short spell in a Jesuit College attending Glasgow University where the rector was the writer and broadcaster Sir Compton MacKenzie.
MacKenzie was impressed by Sydney's lyrical voice and introduced him to Parlophone's Oscar Preus and to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Thus began the career of a fine interpreter of Scottish and Irish song.
