Arthur Johnstone And The Stars Band - Doon Through The Years [CD] [VENDOR DIRECT]
Recorded for May Day 2011, Doon Through The Years is a definitive live performance from Scotland's greatest political folk singer. Over the past five decades, Arthur Johnstone has established himself as the defining voice of songs of protest and struggle; though, as here, they are always delivered with large doses of both humour and humanity. The CD contains some of Arthur's 'greatest hits' - Jarama Valley, Bandiera Rossa and John MacLean March; songs from his earlier career - Dylan's Playboys and Playgirls and the anti-nuclear H-Bomb Thunder; plus some new material - These Hands and the self-penned title track tribute to the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders' Work-in, Doon Through The Years. It is not just Arthur's powerful performance that makes this CD special, but also the sheer breadth of material. Listening to this CD will make you angry at injustice, make you laugh at life's absurdities and make you proud of the folk-song legacy that Arthur Johnstone has created for generations to come.
Arthur's lead vocals are more than ably supported by the Stars Band: Brian Miller - guitar, mandolin, vocals; Charlie Soane - fiddle, mandolin; Gavin Livingstone - piano, guitars, banjo; Alan Matthews - bass

Clyde Valley Stompers - Collection 1956 - 61 [CDx2]
This "2 FOR THE PRICE OF 1" compilation features Scotland's premier Trad Jazz Band of the 1960s producing happy, goodtime popular music.
If you were looking for a classic Trad Jazz band of the 1960s The Clyde Valley Stompers fitted the bill. Their sound was big and brash and they were enormously popular. They had formed as early as 1952 and made their first recordings (on disc 1) for Decca's Scottish Beltona label in 1956. It wasn't until 1959 under the leadership of Ian Menzies, and a switch to the major Pye label with the legendary Lonnie Donegan producing, that they began to have any real success. Vocalist Fionna Duncan was a great asset and gave them a minor hit with 'Salty Dog' in 1960. Despite several attempts they were not able to repeat the chart success. They became Scotland's premier band and toured the UK extensively. Their popularity was short-lived and essentially it was all over by the end of 1961. They struggled on until 1963 with an ever-changing personnel, but were one of the major casualties when the Trad Boom came to an end.
The Stompers had some good musicians and produced happy, goodtime, popular Jazz. This 'Double CD For The Price Of One' package covers all their recorded output from 1956 to 61 plus one previously unreleased track.. The band is still remembered and this release should prove popular.

DVD of the complete fifth TV series, screened on BBC Scotland and BBC Four in October / November 2011.
Transatlantic Sessions once again brings together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland in an award-winning format that affords, in the words of one critic, a unique insight into the sheer joy of making music.
Recorded in a beautiful old hunting lodge at the entrance to Glen Lyon near Aberfeldy in the Perthshire Highlands, top vocal and instrumental exponents of the Country and Celtic traditions gathered to rehearse and play together with no audience except themselves and a resident house-band of their peers. As with previous series, music co-directors were Nashvilles Jerry Douglas
and Shetlands Aly Bain.
Leavening the intimacy of the music-making through each of the six programmes in the series is a strong element of spectacular Highland scenic photography while this time around a greater emphasis on informal backstage conversations and stories serves to highlight the series genuinely historic qualities of collaboration and performance.

Scotland The What - The Final Fling (DVD)
This DVD is dual format (PAL or NTSC) and should be playable worldwide. Region 0 (worldwide).
(November 2008 re-release of 1995 recording)
90 minutes of Doric humour in songs and sketches. Buff Hardie, Stephen Robertson and George Donald started Scotland The What for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it was an immediate success. The farewell shows in Aberdeen were a 4-week sell-out.
Scotland the What? is a theatrical phenomenon. It began simply as three young men with a Fringe show in a tiny hall at the Edinburgh Festival. It was an immediate hit. Greatness was thrust upon the trio. Now it is described as a national institution. Buff, Steve and George toured the country with great success, delighting audiences with their unique style of comedy. Gales of laughter greeted the hilarious sketches and witty songs they have written about Scotland and the Scots.
Although at the height of their popularity they decided to call it a day and quit the theatrical circuit in order to spend more time in other pursuits, one last tour was arranged so that they could say farewell to their many fans by re-visiting the venues large and small where they appeared over the years. Their last goodbye was a four week season on their home ground in Aberdeen - His Majesty's Theatre. If you saw the show this will be a suitable souvenir, but if you were unlucky and couldn't get a ticket for this memorable occasion, this DVD will be the next best thing..

Best Of Scotland The What? Volume 2 [CD]
Pawky, dry, highly intellectual and bitingly satirical.. And yes, hilariously funny! Scotland, her peoples, her cultures and her social institutions endearingly mocked and lambasted by arch comedians Scotland The What? This CD gathers twelve wonderful performances dating from 1979 through to 1995, each just as funny as the last.
1. Santa's Phone Call (1983)
In which an enterprising shopkeeper (Mr Robertson) respectfully suggests some suitable Christmas gifts for a Very Inportant Child.
2. The Hundred Fiddlers (1988)
In which the entire cast celebrate the joy of participating in a very special kind of music making.
3. Retirement (1995)
In which two veteran bowlers (Mr Robertson and Mr Hardie) reveal different views on what life has to offer in the geriatric lane.
4. Columbus (1995)
In which Mr Donald identifies the individual who is solely responsible for the scatter-gun onslaught of American Culture on this country.
5. The Sleeper (1979)
In which Mr Robertson suffers and Mr Hardie relishes a nocturnal journey.
6. Mastermind (1988)
In which the learned question-master of TV's best known quiz show (Mr Hardie)is surprised and ultimately shocked by an eridite contestant (Mr Robertson).
7. City Of Culture (1988)
In which a somewhat raunchy Glaswegian (Mr Donald) bemoans one side-effect of his city's new found status as a cradle of artistic activity.
8. The Beechgrove Garden (1979)
In which Mr Hardie and Mr Robertson presume to impersonate Scotland's two greatest ever television stars.
9. Press Conference (1984)
In which a redoubtable Aberdeen councillor (Mr Hardie) responds with aplomb to some testing questions on his Council's plans for the 21st century put to him by an assorted collection of media hounds (Mr Robertson).
10. Rowantree (1984)
In which Mr Donald joins forces with the late Lady Nairne to present what might described as a sweet song.
11. Moderator (1984)
In which the spirit of John Knox Lives as the Moderator of the General Assembly (Mr Robertson) delivers a powerful sermon to a distinguished, and in parts regal, congregation in Crathie Parish Church.
12. Farewell To Auchterturra (1986)
In which to Mr Donald's sensitive accompaniment, an Auchterturra resident (Mr Robertson) gently dampens the nostalgic glow of a distant exile (Mr Hardie).
